The peak of naturally aspirated, performance driving and the last of its kind. The last hydraulic steering, last Mezger, and last 6-speed GT3RS.
The 997 is respected as the greatest water-cooled 911 chassis made. Introduced in 2004 as a 2005 model year, the 997 was the return of the round headlights that had disappeared with the 996. With a new an improved water-cooled flat six, the 997 platform was a huge success. The car had the right proportions, an analog feel, and technology modern enough to make the car a truly usable daily sports car. Looking back, it was the end of Porsche’s greatest era as well, the Mezger era.

With the success of the GT3RS overseas, Porsche brought the GT3RS to the US with the first rendition of the 997, known as the 997.1. Powered by a highrevving 3.6 liter flat six, the car was a track weapon that screamed at high RPMs establishing it instantly as a peak driver’s car. As the platform evolved, the second iteration of the 997 arrived, the 997.2 and with that came more changes and final variants of the iconic flat six designed by Hans Mezger. With the 997.2 came the 3.8 liter GT3RS. Adding displacement provided more torque, more power, and a newly developed aerodynamics package that made the car have the same downforce levels in the rear as Porsche’s GT3 cup car.

With 450 horsepower and a redline of 7900 RPM, the 3.8 liter GT3RS was a remarkable achievement in Porsche history and as time went on, the 911 later lost a lot of what makes this car so special. This generation had the last Mezger engine, last six-speed gearbox, and the last pure hydraulic steering in a GT3RS, making the 997.2 GT3RS a true end of an era. Launched with factory checkered striping packages and a narrow color spectrum to pick from, the GT3RS of this generation came in very few colors for the average buyer. For those with the right connections and relationships, a select few were available in PTS through Porsche’s CXX program and that is what makes this particular 3.8 RS striking.
This factory stripe delete, GT silver metallic, 3.8 RS was also optioned with PCCBs, Bluetooth phone connection, and further exclusive options like painted yellow bucket seat harness loops, speed yellow seat belts, aluminum foot rest, deviated yellow stitching on the seats, and extended yellow deviated stitching in the rear side panels. Showing only 2,000 miles, this PTS 3.8 RS is a collector-grade example that will continue to shine as the pinnacle of driver’s-era cars.
