While the E36 was available in the United States from 1995 to 1999, the European specification, released in 1992, featured differences resulting in a more desirable vehicle. The North American market received the 3.0L engine producing 240 horsepower, paired to a five-speed gearbox. In late 1995, BMW provided an upgrade to the M3 with increased displacement for the European models to the 3.2L producing 321 horsepower at 7,400 RPM and 258 lb-ft of torque, and mated to the new six-speed manual. The Euro E36 debuted an upgraded Double VANOS, a new innovation allowing for variable timing on both the intake and camshaft optimizing power and torque.
