The beginning of Porsche’s legacy through the Rennsport aka “RS” label.
Brought to life after the Lemans titan, the 917, was banned, the 2.7 Carrera RS was Porsche’s “watch this”.
When presented to the world at the Paris Motor Show in 1972, the Carrera RS 2.7 was an absolute hit. Between its debut in October to the end of November all 500 units needed to homologate the car, sold. After expanding its production run, the Carrera RS became homologated for Group 3 in addition to Group 4 racing.
The car featured the absolute essentials with a lightweight chassis, light-weight interior and a more powerful 2.7-liter unit based on the successful 2.4 flat six first introduced to the silhouette. As part of the “Touring” option, the car then could be optioned with arm rests and more creature comforts.

With a body focused on weight reduction, thinner metal, thinner windows, plastic parts and removal of sound insulation helped make the RS as lean as it is known for being.
With the introduction of the iconic ducktail wing, the RS also achieved higher top speeds due to its improved aerodynamic stability. Equipped with wider wheels, widened arches, and revised suspension the Carrera RS 2.7 became one of the most important cars in Porsche history.
