The Birth of the Ducktail

The beginning of Porsche’s legacy through the Rennsport aka “RS” label.

Brought to life after the Lemans titan, the 917, was banned, the 2.7 Carrera RS was Porsche’s “watch this”.

Carrera RS 2.7

1973 Porsche Carrera RS 2.7

When presented to the world at the Paris Motor Show in 1972, the Carrera RS 2.7 was an absolute hit. Between its debut in October to the end of November all 500 units needed to homologate the car, sold. After expanding its production run, the Carrera RS became homologated for Group 3 in addition to Group 4 racing.

The car featured the absolute essentials with a lightweight chassis, light-weight interior and a more powerful 2.7-liter unit based on the successful 2.4 flat six first introduced to the silhouette. As part of the “Touring” option, the car then could be optioned with arm rests and more creature comforts.

An ideal synthesis

With a body focused on weight reduction, thinner metal, thinner windows, plastic parts and removal of sound insulation helped make the RS as lean as it is known for being.

With the introduction of the iconic ducktail wing, the RS also achieved higher top speeds due to its improved aerodynamic stability. Equipped with wider wheels, widened arches, and revised suspension the Carrera RS 2.7 became one of the most important cars in Porsche history.

Restored to concours condition

Sold new in Düsseldorf, Germany, in January of 1973. It came from the factory finished as it is today in Light Yellow with Black Perlon Corduroy upholstery and equipped with the M472 Touring package and the M410 Sport Seat on the driver’s side only. Notably, the car retains its numbers-matching engine and gearbox.

In 2014 it benefited from a comprehensive cosmetic and mechanical restoration under previous ownership by preeminent Porsche specialist RUF Automobile in Pfaffenhausen, Germany, at more than €218,000.

As the car’s current condition indicates, the restoration work was executed to the highest of quality standards and remains incredibly well-preserved inside and out. With the reputation and provenance of RUF Automobile, this Carrera RS is a superb example of Porsche history and RUF history having been taken care of by only the greatest sets of hands to work on these vehicles.
